No matter how extensive the hack, people aren’t really worried or angry about it. Why? They can’t be unaware, even if it’s being extensively reported to LUBACH.
Is it because clients are jaded and think it is business as usual?
This is NOT business as usual! For anyone professionally involved with IT and cloud technologically, it would be a personal and professional disgrace if this happened on their watch. Or should it be… But then again, we live in a time when the most ignorant reach the top in companies and politics.
Is it because customers don’t realize what it means to them? I’m guessing over FIFTY THOUSAND EUROS per victim! That is all the direct costs of misusing this information, but especially the costs of rectifying everything, the legal wrangling, and especially all the stress this causes when you suddenly find yourself with more debt than you could ever earn.
I have already updated my knowledge session on the impact of these kinds of hacks on citizens and businesses, so I will cover all of this as soon as I present it. This session is available in Dutch and English.
I am still left with the following questions:
- What else can we do to wake people up?
- How do we enforce privacy by design?
- How do we ensure that no manager, politician, or spokesperson gets away with cowardly remarks like “this is business as usual” or “these hackers are really clever.”
